Morris Avenue School – PS-469X
As part of the development of a new NYC public school in the Bronx, the landscape design at 355 Morris Avenue transforms previously underutilized exterior areas into a cohesive network of outdoor learning and play environments. Working closely with the architectural team, JPLA created a series of SCA-compliant spaces that respond to the school’s programmatic needs while enriching daily life for students and staff.
The lower level is defined by a vibrant and colorful play area that brings energy and identity to the schoolyard. Bold surfacing patterns and age-appropriate play elements offer opportunities for active recreation, social interaction, and imaginative play. Planting areas are integrated throughout to introduce greenery, seasonal interest, and moments of respite within the energetic space.
On the upper level, a unique rooftop play area provides an immersive sensory experience. Musical playground elements invite children to explore sound, rhythm, and creativity, encouraging collaborative play and adding an expressive dimension to the school’s outdoor environment.
